So...First Daughter's First Mix

I am such a proud mother.
My daughter has discovered the art of mix making.  And she's pretty good at it!

This is her first mix.  She is very much into music and knows all the songs and artists on the radio plus some.  She has an impressive musical catalog in that smart ten-year-old brain of hers.  She's even been making copies and handing them out to friends.  It's awesome.

She picked each of these songs herself.
And I must say - I'm pretty proud of her taste in music.

So...The Mother Mixes

So...obviously I never finished my Christmas memories.
Oops.

Blogging doesn't seem to be my strength these days.
So I thought I would stick with something I am good at - making mixes :)

I've been cleaning out the nooks and crannies of my house and basically have been trying to generally declutter every aspect of my life for the past two years.  In the process I have come across many many mix CDs.  Most are badly scratched and some aren't even playable.  But I do not want to lose these mixes - they are each a part of my past and hold precious memories.

So...I'm documenting them here on my blog and share them with you because really, it's great music.

These Mother Mixes are the mothers of all mixes.  These are college to me!  Back in the day of Napster and illegal music downloading and burning CDs was awesome.  I would find and download (for free!) every song by my favorite artists, which back then were mostly Guster, Dispatch, OAR, Dashboard Confessional, and Dave Matthews.  I also loved finding acoustic versions and covers of my favorite tunes.  My computer had a playlist of over 500 songs (probably more actually) that would play of shuffle all day long.  Each one of these songs are on the soundtrack of my college life. 

Feels like studying for the next mid-term, writing a paper, eating vending machine food, and waiting for my boyfriend to call while lounging in high school soccer sweats on my bed up on cement blocks in my poster-walled dorm room.
Seems like a lifetime ago, but when I put on this music I feel like I'm right there again.

We're getting ready to leave on a week long vacation/road trip tomorrow and I'm getting our music all ready to go for our sixteen hour drive.  We have a collection of girl mixes in our library now which totals about 640 minutes of fun, girly songs.  That's eight hours.  That's awesome.

Right now I'm re-burning all our mixes to CDs that are scratch free.  We don't want to be disappointed with skipping discs mid road trip.  (I'm still boycotting digital music in the car - it drives Husband crazy).

I found this mix I made for Husband back when we were dating in a pile of random CDs. 
I couldn't throw it away without documenting this playlist for posterity's sake.
These songs were meaningful to us - our own little inside jokes, memories, and messages to each other. 

Most of them I remember, some of them I don't at all. 
Like that Eminem song...what? 
I have no memory of why that song was meaningful to us (and warning - it has a lot of bad words in it...) but maybe it made us laugh???  We were kind of like that back then. 
I think it's something we like about each other - our not-so-perfectness.
And we both were in-the-closet Eminem fans then (me more in the closet than he) which we liked about each other too.
We appreciated genius talent in any shape or form.

Anyhoo...
Husband is who introduced me to the music from Moulin Rouge and I loved that he loved a musical.
I have vivid memories of him singing at the top of his lungs along with this version of the Elton John classic.
Have I told you Husband has a great voice?
Well, he does - and I love when he sings that song to me.

The Vanessa Carlton song was meaningful to us because we spent 7 months in a long distance relationship.  The lyrics to 1000 Miles are self explanatory.
The Puddle of Mudd song was meaningful for the same reason, although when we sang it was changed the lyrics "there's ocean in between us" to "there's 3000 miles of land between us."
We thought it was funny and clever and we loved singing it to each other.

We listened to lots and lots of Incubus and 311, so naturally I threw a couple of our favorites from them in there.

We both loved Led Zepplin (which made me love him even more) so two of our favorites were included.

I loved Bush and I knew he would think of me whenever he heard Glycerine.

I threw in a couple of my favorite love songs - Everything, I Will Love You, and Kissing You.

The others are songs I remember hearing a lot on the radio in the car together, singing them together, and some making us laugh (like Husband singing "I'm Like a Bird" in his best Nelly Furtado voice).

Husband and I have always shared a love for all different types of music.
It's something I've always loved about him.
I love that we can ride in the car together and just listen to music and love it.
I love that we can rock out together and sing at the top of our lungs to anything from classic rock to musicals.  It is so much fun.

Music has always marked and tabbed chapters of my life.
These are some that remind me of the wild and crazy days of dating the man of my dreams.
Our taste in music may have changed since then, but listening to this mix still brings back all the awesome feelings and memories of that time.

So...Classic Mixes

In my cleaning up and cleaning out I have come across lots of CD mixes.
Most of them are scratched and not very pleasant to listen too.
But I still feel making mixes is a dying art, and I have a hard time parting with them.
Someday I want to make digital playlists of all of these awesome mixes!
And so I thought I'd document (and share) them here - since they're pretty awesome and I don't want to lose them.

These first four are part of a CD collection I made for Little Brother on his 16th birthday.
If I remember correctly, I made him 16 mixes.
Nothing says "I love you" - in this case "Happy Birthday" - than a homemade mix CD.

Son, 1 day old::laying in the hospital bed with me makin a mix

Within hours of his birth, it was clear that Son had also inherited a love for music.

While laying there together in the quiet hospital room for the allotted 48 hours, we listened to song after song, compiling a mix in honor of him.

His squirmy newborn body would grow calm and still when I held the ipad up to his tiny ear for approval of each song.  That first day, and every day since, he could be calmed with music.

I think together, we compiled an optimal playlist of sweet lullabies fit for a sweet baby boy.
I will always think of those precious first moments, cuddling my new boy, when I hear these songs.

There is something very appealing to me about getting in the car, popping this baby in, and just driving. These songs speak to a part of my soul that doesn't get much recognition these days. I am a grown up now after all.

Some of these songs are from my past; some are more recent; all would have served as much needed therapy for my overactive teenage heart.

I made this mix for a friend of mine, but the truth...it's for me too.
